Savoir-faire & Passion
A skin becomes leather after a tanning process. Tannins –plant-based most often– soften the leather and make it rot-resistant and durable.
The leathers are then split along the thickness direction in order to separate the upper layer -the leather flower, which is the softest part– from the under layer –the split leather, which has a rougher appearance)–.
Only soft leathers are used for gloves unlike shoes or clothing, which do not require full suppleness and therefore can use second-class leathers.
Le nubuck est un cuir gratté réalisé à partir d’un cuir pleine fleur (cuir ayant gardé son épaisseur d’origine) ou d’un cuir fleur sciée (cuir dont on a diminué l’épaisseur d’origine).
Various Finishes Available
Glazed or nubuck finishes applied to the leather flower give a smooth and varnished appearance, that also protects gloves. On the contrary, velvet finishes applied to the crust confer a specific and more natural relief. The patina will magnify this natural aspect over time.
Nubuck is scraped leather made from full flower leather –leather that has kept its original thickness– or from split-grain leather –leather whose original thickness has been reduced.
Types Of Leather
Lambskin: Very soft leather. Perfect for gloves. Can be plongé or glazed. The absolute reference of gloves.
Goatskin: Leather stronger than lamb leather, without loosing softness.
Sheep: Used in a variety of forms (curly, shearling, etc.). Sought after for its natural complicity with wool. Assurance of very warm gloves.
Deer: Mainly used for sportswear gloves. A little less supple. Very appreciated for its rough embossed surface. Gives a raw aspect to the fabrics.
Peccary: Very durable leather from a small animal originally from South America. An extraordinary soft and fluffy touch feeling. Its fine and particular grain –3 very visible follicle pores– ensures great comfort. Will acquire a patina over time. One of the finest leathers in luxury glove making. Combines a natural appearance and a very stylish sportswear look. Peccary gloves are a must!
Carpincho, also known as Capybara: A rare and unique leather compared to the finest ones in the world. Leather from the world’s largest rodent, native of South America. Sometimes confused with peccary skin. A distinctive sign: it shows 4 to 5 visible pores where peccary leather shows only 3. The velvet aspect makes it wonderfully soft to touch. A supple and durable leather that is perfect for high-end gloves.
